Interesting to me is Bowie's understanding of the Occult and how he manages to weave it into his compositions, a great article addressing this can be found here . . . David Bowie and the Occult - The Laughing Gnostic

I find that interesting (at the least) considering Bowie has already used almost every gimmick that was at his disposal through the span of his career.
The occult has been associated with rock/metal for decades. The most famous that comes to mind right away is when Ozzy Osbourne (supposedly) bought a castle that was formally owned by satanist Alister Crowley. I'm not quite certain if it is fact or just an urban legend? (Who cares)..it was used as a gimmick in order to sale popularity by Osbourne.
The 2nd. instance is when Judas Priest was drawn into court regarding, their music was sending subliminal messages through their lyrics and music, which caused two individuals to commit suicide.

Geesh.
The occult and rock music!
