The occult has been associated with rock/metal for decades. The most famous that comes to mind right away is when Ozzy Osbourne (supposedly) bought a castle that was formally owned by satanist Alister Crowley. I'm not quite certain if it is fact or just an urban legend? (Who cares)..it was used as a gimmick in order to sale popularity by Osbourne.
The 2nd. instance is when Judas Priest was drawn into court regarding, their music was sending subliminal messages through their lyrics and music, which caused two individuals to commit suicide.  Geesh.

That was actually Jimmy Page who purchased Boleskine House on the Loch Ness in Scotland. Page also owned an occult bookstore that contained all of Crowley's works and many other Grimoires and stuff. Today Page is known as a member of a Rosicrucian Order that works with Thelemic Christian mysticism.
Not everyone in the music biz uses the occult as a gimmick, a few are real practitioners.
