Brian De Palma is one of the most overrated directors ever. Sure Scarface had it's moments. Carlito's Way was certainly watchable but I find him all style and no substance.
The Untouchables is no exception. The backdrop: Prohibition U.S.A. The Actors: Robert De Niro, Sean Connery, Andy Garcia yet it is still a film that it is cliched and overly melodramatic.
Using Versace for costume design? WTF? Is this a film or a fashion show? As if a beat cop (Connery) wore tailored suits.
Odessa Steps? Copy....and copy and copy. The pram falling downstairs is not a homage. It is a cheap imitation devoid of merit or individuality.
Robert De Niro... apart from displaying some much needed malevolence at a dinner table it is a wasted role and would have been much better with original choice Bob Hoskins.
Sean Connery. What accent are u portraying? I think it is supposed to be Irish American but it just you; once again just acting. You are Scottish playing an American with Irish Roots and end up sounding like none of them. (A damn shame as a rare highlight is his death crawl through his apartment).
Andy Garcia... u were in 8 Million Ways To Die a year earlier and blew everyone away in one of your first film roles and then became such a underwritten character on this film. Shame
Thank feck for Billy Drago as the hitman. Another underwritten role but he owned it both physically and thematically.
I haven't mentioned Costner for a reason. He just resides in the movie and is neither watchable or unwatchable. He is just there.
