The rest of my book club and I watched this, because we just finished reading the book. After trying very hard to separate the two in my brain, I've come to the conclusion that the movie really was just fair. The acting in some places even made me wince a little, and I'm no film snob by any stretch of the imagination.

However, looking at the two together, I'd say the present day part of the movie just didn't have the same build up and impact that the book had. As a whole, the book ripped my heart out. The movie barely stirred me at all, with the exception of one part where
