They have an active compound in them called LSA, which is a psychedelic substance, although not nearly as strong as LSD.
I've done them a couple of times, and I know there's a good way to prepare them so no one gets sick...but I've never really done that way. It looked too complicated, and I was too lazy to bother with it, because it never made me sick anyway.
I just boil them, to get some of the junk off of them, then mash 'em up and eat them...usually drinking some tea to wash them down. I've only seen one person get sick taking them this way. I'm sure that some peoples' stomachs are just more sensitive than others.
It's not a bad high, though. Don't expect crazy hallucinations or anything, but it definitely pulls you into an interesting head space, gives you nuts dreams, some closed eye visuals (though not necessarily as vivid as on even low LSD amounts) and some tracers. In my experience.
