I don't know why this gets such a bad reputation amongst Of Montreal fans. It's manic, for sure, and only seems to work in the album context, but it's got moments of absolute genius, and Gallery Piece is possibly the sexiest song I've ever heard. It's no Hissing Fauna, and it's a bit of an exhausting experiment, but Kevin Barnes fascinates me and it's definitely worthwhile.

I love it. Yes, it can be tiring because, as you said, it only works in the album context, but when I'm in the mood for it, it's great. I think this is ultimately the peak of what Kevin Barnes was working for if you listen to the progression of Satanic Panic to Skeletal Lamping. I think he failed with Coquelicot Asleep In the Poppies, learned how to write a decent pop song, and then attempted the style again here. He nailed it. Sadly, he went back to overthinking it again with False Priest. That album is a huge disappointment.
