I like a game that gives me principal and secondary tasks to do (not too linear) but still tasks to do as in I`m reaching an overall goal with interesting characters and locations etc. For example, I find mini missions such as helping a villager look for his lost son or wife boring, especially if there is an endless supply of these misssions (Zelda tends to get these type of mission spot on though) Somebody mentioned its similiarity to LOTR above, but of course LOTR always had a set task and was very focused.
The best roleplaying game I`ve ever played to date is still Final Fantasy VII and any game that can get me an experience like that.....

Ah FF7 remains a classic indeed even though it's now 15 years old.
If you haven't played Xenogears or Chrono Trigger/Cross, I highly recommend checking out those classics as well.
