The thing is even if you renounce an ideology (or religion), you are still going to operate by it's dictates until you find a new one to replace it. So even if everyone in the USA started calling themselves atheists, they'd still act like Christians. My point being, even if we aren't a religiously Christian nation, we certainly are culturally.
