I think atheism has become somewhat of a trend. I know a lot of young people who haven't put any thought into this kind of thing, yet they just want to call themselves an atheist because it goes along with their desire to be a rebel and to go against the grain.
Being an atheist is a million times more sensible than believing in a God. To have no proof indicates which viewpoint to take, still believing despite that is a sign of insanity itself.
