I also think Slipknot are pretty mainstream, "Iowa" got to number 3 on the Billboard and number 1 in the UK albums charts. Sold more than 1,000,000 copies in the US alone.

Mainstream in terms of sales perhaps, but not in terms of quality.
The Beatles sold quite a few albums but you don't see people criticizing them for that now do you?
