And the opposite is equally true, Coldplay being one example...
I was really just trying to talk with someone who thought Slipknot was good because they were "the only band who haven't sold themselves to mainstream", which is wrong on two levels: my neighbour's garage band hasn't sold themselves to mainstream either, but they aren't good by any stretch of the imagination, and I'm sure that "not being mainstream" is a pretty feeble requirement for being a "good" band.
