It depends on how you define genuinely great. As far as I can tell there are some genuinely great female vocalists who've had bands tailored to their talents and have gone on to great success (think any major Soul, R&B diva).
Same as there are a few genuinely great bands with female members (Stereolab, Sonic Youth, MBV etc.) but in those cases the women were just 'one of the guys', while that sounds sexist on one hand, it can also be seen as 'true' equality on the other - there's no special treatment, it's just another band member.
