Not being able to have fun without alcohol can vary between people who claim that they need the alc to have fun. Of course there will be many of these people who are hopeless alcoholics, but there are also several different kinds of drinkers who hold the same opinion without having the "disease" of alcoholicism...or just don't know what they are really saying because they're hammered already. It really depends on how they define fun in the long run.

What a load of rubbish. People say that you should be able to have fun without alcohol for a range of reasons.
For some people, alcohol can affect them in negative ways such as increasing violent tendencies, taking advantage of another drunk person, and getting in a car and driving.
There are those who can't handle their drink so this is a way of suggesting they may be better of not drinking at all. You can still be sober and have a good time. If this was not correct, people would be drunk all the time.
I think it's great for making people feel confident, but eventually you've got to try and build some self-confidence and learn to socially interact with people. No one says you have to be a social butterfly but you'll find a lot of people are just as insecure as you in social settings.
And it's alcoholism.
