There were definitely a lot of throwbacks to 50's R&B, Soul, etc., which I would guess is Brian Wilson's attempt to return to innocence amidst his difficulties. I'm not too familiar with any specific groups, but the harmonies are clearly drawing from that 50's Spector sound. However, i think the songwriting is a little more complex in most cases, such as God Only Knows.
