I use Addictive Drum and EZ Drummer.

Both have their strengths and weakness.

- Addictive Drum (no expansion)

Most realistic drum sound but you won't get a good drum mix off the get go. You'll need to spend a few hours tweaking your sound and doing a lot of EQing. It took me a few weeks to get a preset that I could just load with pretty much anything I do.

AD has powerful effects and a wide variety of tools that enables you to completely modify the output. From Techno drums to de-tuned tom rolls, you can do whatever you want if you know how to work with the tools it provides.

The kit itself is a bit limited and if you're looking at anything beyond heavy Rock, you're going to start wanting more.

Anything from world music to hard rock, AD is the way to go. Not saying you can't make any Metal with AD, it's just not ideal. Anything beyond 250BPM starts sounding a bit weird and requires an important amount of mixing.

- Ez Drummer (with drum kit from hell)

Ez drummer alone is worthless but with drum kit from hell or any kit you like, it becomes a good tool. It's quick, easy to use and default state sounds are usually good enough in a ruff mix. A few EQ here and there but aside from that, it was already done for you. ED allows you to quickly place some drum parts and get something rolling but you cannot play around with the sound as much as AD. Ez drum really really needs the expansion packs. Once you have them, it's pretty good! The drum is very realistic BUT, you need to understand velocity and play with it. My only beef against it is that the "default" mix is very dry.

Metal, Death Metal and beyond... Drum Kit from Hell was made to sound fast and even at exaggerated BPM, it still stays consistent. When I need to make a hard hitting metal track, Ez is my default software.
