The ending is very ambiguous and is open to interpretation. It may or may not interest you but the films writer (Paul Schrader) is also a decent director in his own right and continued the theme of lonely, disaffected men in American Gigolo and Light Sleeper which he says were the same character as Travis Bickle but in their 30's and 40's respectively and although they are not sequels at all they are fascinating viewing especially Light Sleeper which is an absolute underrated gem starring Willem Dafoe and Susan Sarandon so that gives you some idea of the quality of the project.
