Default ID song from 1977 episode of "Soul Train"?

Hello.

Here in Chicago, the TV station WCIU is where SOUL TRAIN got its start. Tonight, as a tribute to Don Cornelius, they ran a marathon of classic SOUL TRAIN episodes. I was watching these and enjoying them, but I had a frustrating experience with one particular song.

The episode in question was Episode 26 from Season 6. It originally aired on February 12, 1977. The guests that week were Thelma Houston and the Commodores.

During the SOUL TRAIN line, the song being played was something like "I'm a Spy for the 'Hood." The singer was explaining how the CIA and FBI were after him even though: "All I want to do is say something good." The chorus went: "I'm a spy for the 'hood/They would stop my songs if they could." It's a great record, but Google, Yahoo, and Bing have all come up empty on this one.

I can't begin to give you a title or artist. If I were comparing it to anything, I'd say it sounded like '70s Marvin Gaye when he was in a political mode but obviously ubpeat and danceable.

Any leads?
