How big / loud are the live performances?
I've been quite taken with the Warwick Sweet 15. It's more than loud enough to jam with friends and small gigs, though I wouldn't rely on it exclusively if you're in a situtaion where the drums are mic'ed.
I've got an original model but they're up to the third revision (better EQ options). It's a 150w combo amp with a single 15" speaker, 1 small tweeter. The series has apparently been discontinued but if you can find one it should be well within your price range (might even be able to step up to the 25 model).
They're also surprisingly light pieces of gear as well. I'm no muscleman but I can carry my Sweet 15 with one hand. Really good sound quality as well, I'd normally play a 5 string and was able to keep my low-B well defined with just a few minor EQ tweaks where most other amps seem happy to project aural mud.
