Even within genres one way is better than the other in terms of production.
Sure, but a pure clean sound, like say Killswitch Engage's sanitized production takes all the aggression and anger out of the sound and leaves us with emotionless aggro riffs that sound good, but not much else. It makes the melodic part of their sound sound great and catchy, but they might as well dump the aggressive part, cause it just sounds fake.

Same problem with a lot of death metal bands. I'm sorry Necrophagist, but you blow. Sure, there are other reason's why they suck, but the crystal clear production is one good reason.

I think a band like Meshuggah benefits a lot from good production values, as seen in their most recent album (although I haven't hear KOLOSS yet).
I'm not particularly familiar with Meshuggah, mostly because they've got the same emotionless, robotic approach to metal as so many modern bands and I just don't really care to listen to them. Sure, the songs may be heavy and brutal, but they've got no heart. Again for other reasons than just production, but the production is just ****ing boring.

Lamb of God's sound lends itself better to the more raw sound (the first two albums). You can still sound gritty and ugly with good production, but this should depend on the artist's ability to do so rather than on how murky the production is.
No you really can't. Old school Lamb of God rules. It's raw and ****ed up as ****. But couldn't care less about them after New American Gospel. I mean, there was a time I dug them, but they just get more and more boring for me as the years go by. Again, for many reasons, but the production is just plain boring. The guitars have groove, sure, but nothing else to make me think, "Oh ****! That's ****in' sick, dude!"

I'm not saying you've got to be trve kvlt and sound like you recorded in a garbage can, but leave some fuzz for god's sake! I say this while listening to Among the Living. Certainly not the most necro of albums, but the production is still not the sanitized, robot sound of Killswitch Engage or Meshuggah.
