It's pretty simple.
When I was a child I used to think the Smurfs and Sesame Street were the pinnacles of television entertainment. Now as an adult I can still enjoy the subtle implications of The Smurfs being a reflection of communism but overall neither of those shows are still appealing to me.
It's not to say you need to let it go, but you can't claim to have grown much if you're still holding fast to your roots. I don't agree with people who try to distance themselves or deny their original influences but at the same time you need to be able to move past them.
