While your comments about a lack of diversity in their records is fair, I don't see why Coldplay are the band most associated with this trait.
Other commercially successful bands such as Oasis, Foo Fighters and Snow Patrol constantly churn out albums of near identical material, yet aren't as heavily criticized as Coldplay.
Also, I'd argue that Coldplay are a far better band than the three I just listed.
I can't say I enjoyed Viva La Vida. I felt it was over-produced and too ballad driven. I preferred the simpler, earlier workings.
I like Trouble, however I will not argue it's similar to Yellow. Similar in the way Clocks is similar to Speed of Sound etc.
Look at Nirvana, they gave us albums with songs which are more or less identical to one an other, yet Cobain and co. are considered as legends of their craft.
I don't see what people want from Coldplay.
Perhaps if Chris Martin mumbled alienated youth rhetoric about 'sticking it to the man' and did drugs, maybe people would begin to like them, who knows?
