I think for a musician like myself, yes, knowing theory can be really beneficial. But for a garden variety guitar player, no it's not necessary to know all the ins and outs of music notation.

No, because I have the ability to answer two separate questions. I don't see how it would be confusing to have two questions that are of a similar topic in the same thread.
