If being fat is simply a case of genetics (and I'm not saying it can't be) then you have to explain by genetics why some people in some countries are more obese than they are in other countries. Coming from Norway, we generally have higher standards of living here than in the US, but obese people are quite rare. I don't normally see any on the average trip out of the apartment. There are no obese people where I work. If obesity comes down to genes, then you have to explain why there the frequency of fat genes in Norway is so much lower compared to the US.
Some people have slower metabolism and may pack on a little more weight, but I personally don't think it makes people obese. Eating too much (bad) food and not moving around makes people obese.
