My old boss was in the state pen for 3 years. He essentially said if you keep to yourself and dont try to be a hardass you will most likely run into very little problems, and its really just movies that make prison seem like the spectacle you would think.
Although he mentioned if you are a child molester or anything of that vain prison is the last place you want to be. Many places lock them up in an entirely different wing.
On another note peoples views of ex cons are always negative. The guy I mentioned is one of the nicest kindest dudes I have ever met and has more than once gone far out of his way to help me.
