I think censorship plays a huge role in it.

Old Hollywood had more restrictions on what can be put on screen so the writing had to be solid to carry the movie. Screenplays and scripts were absolutely fantastic in the earlier years.

New Hollywood has far less restrictions on what can be put on screen so (as a whole) the writing has dipped a bit to make room for shock value. The great screenplays are just few and far between now. However the look of new films is just way more stunningly beautiful than the majority of older films.

I don't choose between the two but those are the differences for me.
