In Cornell's defense I recall interviews he did around the time Scream was coming out. He was very open about the fact that it was a departure and that he was experimenting with different elements of the industry. To him it was a forced creative challenge, not so much an attempt at commercial success. The result seemed to be a sharper reflection on what made Soundgarden so special, a fact he routinely acknowledged throughout the interview, as well as SG being the only truly special group he'd been involved with. I don't think it was necessarily a dig at Audioslave but that band was totally conceived in a boardroom.
Then again the dude has like 3 daughters and an ex-wife. That sh*t ain't cheap, especially when the girls decide it's time for university, and the ex is your old manager who would know EXACTLY how much money you made.
