Yes, ESL is a different discipline from simply teaching English to native
speakers. Some of the teaching methods are transferable.

My wife taught adult ESL, and has also taught education classes to education majors on ESL, in university.

As for music journalism, unless you get really lucky, it's very difficult to make a living. I wrote for years for a regional music mag, for free CDs and being guestlisted; it's still online here:

Nowadays I write a local music column for a quarterly mag, each piece will pay for going out to dinner a couple times. Won't pay the rent.
