Well, the answer is in the title of the thread, Death's frontman, Chuck Schuldiner...
He certainly was a great contributor to the development of Death Metal and its evolution towards more technical and progressive territories. Maybe he would have experienced with jazz/fusion if he still lived.
Another guy who died too early, Krzysztof Komeda, a jazzman who was hired by Polanski to perform the music for his movies, among which Rosemary's Baby's score.
