That's because you have the retrospective benefit of elapsed time. Now that it's over it makes it a lot easier to compare all those classic grunge albums *shudders... a lot*. Your generation gets to take the entire pile in one shot and pick and choose the best of the bunch. We had to wait, and see, and hope for the next album to somehow top the previous one. That's really how and why some of those albums have the reputation they do.

Keep in mind, no internet streaming options in 1991-92 when SLTS was charting, and peaking at #6 in North America. Here are some of the other highlights from those years...

(Everything I Do) I Do It For You, Bryan Adams
Gonna Make You Sweat, C+C Music Factory (till you bleed)
Unbelievable, EMF (OHhhh!)
More Than Words, Extreme
Baby, Baby, Amy Grant
From A Distance, Bette Midler
Right Here, Right Now, Jesus Jones
Good Vibrations, Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch (Whalberg)
Justify My Love, Madonna
Joyride, Roxette
Losing My Religion, R.E.M.
Summertime, D.J. Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince
Baby Got Back, Sir Mix A-lot
Jump, Kris Kross
Under The Bridge, Red Hot Chili Peppers (it wasn't all horrible)
To Be With You, Mr. Big (yes it was)
I'm Too Sexy, Right Said Fred
Achy Breaky Heart, Billy Ray Cyrus (it really was)
November Rain, Guns N' Roses
Life Is A Highway, Tom Cochrane

SLTS ended up as #32 for 1992...

So when you compare SLTS and Nevermind to the albums featuring the crap listed above it kind of becomes a little clearer why it had such an impact on the mainstream and developed the reputation it has.

Though to be honest I'm surprised at the popularity of the so-called 2nd gen grunge kids who all jumped onto the Nirvana train. Talk about missing the point.

Monkey see, monkey do (I don't know whyYYYyyyyy)
