For me, if a punk band is a punk band, then they are a punk band, regardless of the era in which they came to be, so the whole post thing throws me a bit.

Well, post-punk is actually a type of music that's pretty different from punk. It's named the way it's named because it grew out of punk, but that doesn't mean they're the same thing, and it doesn't mean punk ceased to exist when post-punk appeared.
