I understand that post generally means after, but how does that apply to music? Is the implication that metal or punk or pop went through some defining phase, and that there was a definitive end to it, signifying that anything coming after that period was considered 'post'?

For me, if a punk band is a punk band, then they are a punk band, regardless of the era in which they came to be, so the whole post thing throws me a bit.

I don't mean to be facetious - just seeking to understand...
