For me, if a punk band is a punk band, then they are a punk band, regardless of the era in which they came to be, so the whole post thing throws me a bit.

pretty much what Janszoon said, in the case of post-metal the name's really just a denotation of a more aggressive/heavier form of post-rock which is generally about taking the rock band format and doing something more symphonic and dynamic than most rock.
