You might even say that genre/sub genre classification lends itself to a more academic (Learning) appreciation of music, whereas, when you start to take a more holistic view, that appreciation begins to deepen even further. When I discover how a particular Martin Denny song directly influenced some work by the Residents, those kinds of obscure little connections
are profound and a big reason why music is my favorite art form.
Both approaches are valid and I'm definitely seeing where one can lead to the other.
