Not so ridiculous when you compare the 60's 70's 80's and partially the 90's to now. I had a stacked collection and multiple playlists of my favorite artists always on hand. Now it's difficult to name a few good ones... and a lot of the new music sounds more like hip hop mixes than traditional soul and r&b ballads.

Mary J Blige
Alicia Keys
John Legend
Raphael Saadiq
Aaliyah - still breaks my heart(2001)
Joss Stone
Whitney Houston (gone but not forgotten)
Ashanti
Faith Evans
MAXWELL
Erykah Badu
Carl Thomas
Luther Vandross had a few hits before he passed in 2005
R Kelly has got a lot of soul (but flip flops back and forth between hip hop and soul and r&B)
Usher - used to be r&B - I don't what the hell he is doing anymore!
Mariah Carey - I hope she has a few more left in her tank. A hell of a songwriter when she her soul juice!

Rhianna/Chris Brown are pop/hiphop artists NOT soul/r&B artists
