Default Fairies Wear Boots

I love this song. I think it's musical genius.

In the intro, Tony starts off in G and plays some plays some palm muted notes. Then after four measures, he hops up a whole step into A and jams on the G string. After four more measures, he hops up another whole step into B to add some tension. Then after a brief interlude, he hops up ANOTHER whole step into C# and solos.

I'm trying to write songs. So when I listen to music with key changes that seem this arbitrary but sound so amazing, I can't help but wonder. Is there something in the music that dictates the need for so many key changes, or did they just randomly decide to keep increasing the pitch?

I'd really like to know, because I want to be able to come up with ideas that are that good.
