I don't see how you could go wrong. Your best bet would probably be to pick up a used, older unit that's pretty rugged. They're fairly simple and hard to break. Just plug 'em into your keyboard and program your patches to your pedals and jam out.
My dad recently gave me one of his old midi boards (Peavey RMC 2010) that I'm considering hooking to my synth. This is what it looks like:



I saw one that sold on Ebay for 55 USD.
Asking price was something like 20 dollars. Either way, the older rugged units are what you'll want if you want something simple. Less likelihood of being messed up and not too many electronics on board. Cheapest solution as well.
