The Beatles did both simple and complex songs. I think when they were playing a Blues-type song then the chord progression was simple, and somtimes when they played something like a showtune like 'Til There Was You" then the chord progression was complex. But in genereal they got more complex as they went along, then they went back to the basics e.g. One After 909. Plus they are the only band I know to ever use an Augmented chord, I think that was made them intriguing to some because they heard some unusual chord and thought subconscientiously "That's different, what chord was that?" I think that added to The Beatles appeal.
