I don`t particularly mean to deflect this thread, but when I read your title I thought you might be lamenting the absence of talents like this guy:-



Most of his songs have very cleverly constructed lyrics, but unfortunately they now sound irretrievably dated. Are there any modern artists attempting to bridge the gap between that era and today ?

Brian Ferry and Peter Skellern have done some covers, while Ray Davies goes one better when he writes a song like this :-
