If there were no Sgt. Pepper there would be a Smile; at least that's my understanding. Smile was supposed to be a response to Revolver from how I've recently heard it. One of the last, crushing factors in Smile's demise was Paul MacCartney bringing over some tracks from Sgt. Pepper's during Smiley Smile recordings - namely, the Vega-Tables session wherein Paul chomped on a carrot for one of the song's percussive tracks.
