I agree with part of what you said, but it depends on what you consider bad bass playing, most people i know consider Noel Redding a bad bass player, but i have never actualy heard him ruin a Jimi Hendrix song(in the studio anyway), and i own all of Hendrix's studio work with him, hes not a very technical bassist, but he got the job done.
