I wouldn't call that bad bass playing then. If he's not very technically advanced, that's one thing, but I've heard a LOT of very fast, hap-slappy bassists who sound great playing alone but ruin the music when they play in a band.

Selfish or lazy bass playing is bad bass playing. If you're only able to play one note per bar then its ok as long as you make it the right note, at the right point.
