I think it's a good album, but it's more of an interesting look at how Chad and John were trying to find their place in the band. Chad was great right out of the box, but John was clearly just pulling his best Hillel impersonation (which isn't surprising considering he idolized RHCP before joining, but still...). I think what makes the album so interesting is that just one album later, he busts out completely comfortable with his own style and voice and totally transforms the band.

I don't think they started ****ting the bed really until Stadium Arcadium. I think we are all in agreement that their early albums are classics, but post BSSM stuff was good in its own right. And yes, even One Hot Minute...it had some good moments. Californication...as commercial as it was...was still a great look at a band somehow making
another comeback (and of course followed by By the Way...a personal favorite).

What about BSSM doesn't deserve that praise?
