Space Cowboys (US 2000). An interesting aspect of Clint Eastwood's career is that he was the last of his contemporaries to make the transition from TV star to film star. James Garner, Steve McQueen and some others I've forgotten were among them. So, at last here is Eastwood and Garner in the same film. Perhaps McQueen would've joined them in Space Cowboys, if he had lived. The funny thing is that, despite being one of the most charismatic American actors, James Garner plays an uncharacteristically muted role, but perhaps this is due to his age. It is also curious that Eastwood should appear in a sc-fi film at a time when the genre was unfashionalbe, although there are plot similarities with Armageddon (US 1998). Parts of Space Cowboys are very predictable, but the end is stll exciting, even if you have seen the film before. Overall, by contrast with many films of the last twenty years or so and because of the cast, Space Cowboys is also enjoyable.
