Hell even most fans of the band I know usually start a sentence about the band by saying 'I love Kiss .........but'.
Even their own thread on this forum asks if they should retire.

You're pretty much right.
I think the odd thing with Kiss is that people who like them are generally more in love with their image (whether they realize it or not) and what they represent in pop culture than they are their music, which is pretty bland if you ask me.
But then again, I haven't really been witness to too many "Gene Simmons is the best bass player ever" arguments. I've never contested the assertion that
Destroyer was the best album ever, because I've never heard anyone try to make that argument, So, is their music overrated? I've yet to heart anyone carry about how great their music is, so I'd have to say no.
Are they/were they overmarketed? Severely.
