I know you have a tendency to view everything in terms of race, but that's only part of the equation. The republican party is, as Tore already mentioned, the homophobe party, the xenophobe party, the Christian fundamentalist party, etc. The more they hang onto those ideologies the more irrelevant they are going to become to national politics as the years go by. I assume the people at the top want their party to continue to have power in Washington so they are going to have to cast off the extremists at some point if they want to remain viable.
