I dunno Sparky, whoever did Brand New Guy did a damn good job of that style beat, and even though a lot of people don't like it, Bitch Suck Dick was a pretty good aping of the sound. You guys are right, Lex really did make a sort of paradigm in beatmaking, but I just wish he could evolve beyond it. The sound got pretty old after hearing everyone trying to rip it in the same season, but that's probably just me.
I agree, they don't bang too hard, which is pretty weird for what popular rap beats call for these days, but I think just the way he sets up sort of crescendos or moods makes the songs. Plane Jane has no crescendo like Turn On the Lights or No Lie, which are massive in their dynamics, but its mood just gets you all low-key and menacing. And, like you said, the production gives it great clarity. It's all very smooth, almost laid back, even though he plays with a lot of loud/soft.
