I don't really get how they're grunge. As far as I understand, grunge is basically mid tempo hardcore generally with distorted, fuzzy guitar. I can see how they have been influenced by the grunge bands in Seattle, but they don't seem to have had any desire to actually be a grunge band themselves. If influence is all that you need to be called something, then I should be able to call Sonic Youth a punk band.
