I was 16 in 1990 and the whole death/black metal explosion hit me like a bomb. Thrash metal was still heavy on my play list and the whole grunge thing was really only starting at that time.
Hair metal bands really did well to survive this time period. David Lee Roth, Crue, Def Leppard, Skid Row and Guns n' Roses being a few examples.
Prog rock was at a low point (I don't remember many new bands at the time), and dance music had gone crazy. The 90s 'raves' where something to behold. I read that a band like Prodigy played to 80,000 people and got about £25 each for their troubles.
