In the film they call themselves "travellers" and, in any case, they're a lot like Brad Pitt's family in Snatch, which was the first, and only, time I'd even heard of these people until I saw Knuckle.
Wikipedia tells me that there are 10,000 to 40,000 of them living in the US. Weird.

Did I teach you that?!
that's what we call them here but they won't like it much if you call them that to their face. The gypsys that stay around here are wankers, they think they own the place and they literally get away with everything. I went to my mates 18th about 4 years ago and when the party was over the gypsys came out of the pub half of the venue and several boys from the party were followed on their way home and attacked. My friends boyfriend got a broken eye socket out of it and one of the bigger guys was barely recognisable and spent a few days in hospital. Police words were "by tomorrow they will be in Manchester" so basically "we are not going to do anything".
