Seemed to me like Spielberg just threw in a couple f-bombs to secure his PG-13 rating.

Honestly, I don't remember any f-bombs, but I do remember listening to an interview with Doris Kearns Goodwin not too long ago where she was talking about how Lincoln was well-known for telling off-color jokes and stories. Apparently that one about the painting of George Washington in the outhouse is one he definitely really told to people.
