Flash mobs are a relatively new social development in which a group of people assemble in public spontaneously or in a pre-planned manner to dance a particular dance together while listening to music.

The first flash mobs were created in Manhattan in 2003. I think of them as being the natural outgrowth of our complex, large society's use of technology to share music and arrange for public congregations of people who long for a feeling of cohesion and community in an otherwise impersonal culture. Rather like a music forum, except with dancing!
